You Got This, Right Boo?
I once went on a date and when the bill came my date kept on talking, ensuring not to glance towards the bill. Finally the words “you got this, right Boo?” were uttered. I was immediately awash with consternation, but graciously pulled out my wallet and paid. Lord knows that was the last time I was ever going to see this person, because I was not going to attempt to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
When it comes to the gentleman paying or asking that he and his date go Dutch there are a few key phrases that if uttered will avoid
embarrassment uncomfortable moments.
If you say “Phyllida may I take you out for dinner?” then be prepared to pay. For everything. From subway tokens to coat check, you are taking Phyllida out.
However, if you say “Drustilla do you have plans this weekend? If not, do you care to hang out?” that’s a different kettle of fish. You see, the key term here is ‘hang out’. This denotes something totally casual with a focus on no pressure fun. If you happen to get hungry while hanging with Drustie and you go for a meal, then asking to go halfsies is totally fair.
All-in-all remember be kind, polite and gracious even if you happen to be on a date with a sow’s ear.
